3 Most Important Tips For Striking Deals On Fabrics: Garage/Yard Sales

In terms of these tips, they've helped you save money and time at your local fabric store. Now let's just say that this last important tip is the best out of all of them.

So far, out of the 3 tips here in this blog, this is the best way to strike a deal on fabrics.

Tip #3: Finding Fabrics at Garage/Yard Sales

Believe it or not, you can find a huge amounts of fabric at garage/yard sales for alot less than the actual fabric department store. At a local fabric department store, you have to pay big amounts of money for whatever amount of fabric you need, but at a garage/yard sale, you can easily find a huge amount of yardage of fabric for a very small price.

A good example would be to find 7 yards of black cotton fabric and you obtaining the entire thing for only $3. That's a huge deal within itself! There's no way anyone, whether cosplayer or regular sewer alike, would ever pass up an offer like that. That example that I gave actually happened to me and I used every bit of that material and I didn't have to worry about running back to the fabric store if I messed up on the project. Another good example is finding a little amount of felt fabric and all you have to pay is 0.25 for it.

Understand that you must be careful at garage/yard sales if you decide to purchase them. Follow these suggestions so you will be happy:

  • Make sure that the fabric(s) don't have any stains- Always check to see if there are any stains on the fabric(s). If there are, it's best NOT to purchase it; however, if for some reason that the fabric(s) is what you need and it has stains on it, make sure that you know that you have stain remover cleaner that can remove the stain out easily. If you do decide to purchase the fabric(s) that has stains, then use "Shout Triple Action" fabric spray to get the stains out.

  • Check for smoke smell- This may sound a little crazy, but please smell the fabric(s) for any cigarettee (or other smoking item) smell inside the fabric(s). The fabric itself is going to smell bad right off the bat, that's not the issue. The issue is if you smell that smoke smell inside the fabric(s), then DO NOT PURCHASE THE FABRIC(S)!!!!! It's almost IMPOSSIBLE to get rid of the smoke smell. If you want to spend a couple of days of airing the fabric(s) outside and then practically drowning them in "Febreeze" fabric freshener, then be my guest, but this is just a friendly warning.

  • Wash the fabric(s) afterwards- ALWAYS wash your fabric(s) once you get home from the garage/yard sale. I say this is because you truly don't know where the fabric(s) that you've purchased has been. It might have been in a smoke-free environment, but you still don't know if the fabric(s) was laied on by a pet. So please wash your fabric(s) in the washer and dryer when you get home. If for some reason that you've obtained fabric(s) that's REAL material, like leather or suede, then just whipe it down with a wet and/or damp wash cloth and let it dry, because those types of fabrics are NOT meant to be washed and dried in the washer and dryer.

I promise you, these suggestions are going to make you happy while you're trying to find a bargin. These suggestions are going to pay off in the long run.

In my honest opinion, getting fabrics at garage/yard sales is the best thing because of how much you can get within a small price range. Totally take advantage of this.

These tips are here to help save time, money, and give you an idea of how to plan your fabric shopping. I hope this helps^^

3 Most Important Tips For Striking Deals On Fabrics: % Off Sales At Your Local Fabric Store

Okay, you have to admit. Everyone absolutely LOVES percent off sales. Hey, even I love them. So like all stores that has percent off sales, it applies to fabric stores too^o^

Tip #2:

PLEASE people, look for those percent off sale signs at your local fabric store. Once that happens, it's all smooth sailing from there. However, still keep your budget in mind so you won't go too crazy on a fabric shopping spree. That would be awsome to go on a fabric shopping spree, but it's kinda hard to do when you have a budget to stick to.

When you find your fabric, look to see if there's a percent off sale sign next to it. If there is, then you're all good to purchase your fabric. Always make sure that you figure up your cost. Once you figure up the regular cost, then you include the percent off number of the fabric.

Another good idea is to look for a extremly cheap table full of fabric. What I mean is, if the fabric store is having a "clean up" sale on particular fabrics at a particular area of the store. Always take advantage of those types of deals because you'll never know how much money you'll save if you don't.

These types of deals are ALWAYS a cosplayers and regular sewers best friend for life because of how much you can save and still obtain the amount of fabric you need for your project.

Alright, so the point I'm trying to make is always take advantage of percent off sales at your local fabric stores.

I hope this helps because I know that I do this every time I'm getting ready to do a cosplay and I'm always thrilled to see percent off sales when I go to the fabric store^o^

3 Most Important Tips For Striking Deals on Fabrics: Bring X Amount of Cash/Knowing Your Bank/Carrying A Scientific Calculator

Important Fact:

As we all know, nothing is ever cheap now a days and being a bargin hunter is the best way to get through life. This fact also applies to purchasing fabrics. Fabrics range in different prices per yard. Some fabrics range in $1.99 per yard to $5.99 per yard and other fabrics range in $7.99 per yard to $15.99 per yard. While you're searching for the fabric you want, be very careful and read your price signs so you won't overspend.

Okay, to some degree, you may think that one of these tips is kinda crazy, but I guarantee you, it's going to help you out tramendously^^ Being on a budget is always a good idea, but sometimes you have to make sacrifices in order to be within your budget.

Tip #1- Bring X Amount Of Cash:

It's always a good idea to bring a huge amount of cash with you so it helps out your bank account. If not anything, it should help you save the money you have in your bank account for your important bills. You may hold up the line a tad longer, but it's always good to have cash because you know how much you have with you. If for some reason you don't know how much you'll spend on your fabric, then always bring an extra $20-$25 at most with you so you won't have to worry.

Trust me, the last thing you want to worry about is not knowing if you have enough cash on you to pay the cashier. Not having to worry about how much you brought with you is the best feeling ever-_- So all in all, having cash on you is one of the best things you ever do when it comes to fabric shopping.

Tip #2- Knowing How Much You Have In Your Bank:

Now, if for some reason that you DIDN'T bring any cash with you whatsoever, but have your debit/credit card, then it's very important to know how much you have in your bank account. If you don't know, then you're in trouble because not only you might go over you're budget, but also, you may overdraw and that's the last thing you want to happen.

Before you leave your home, please check your checkbook register and online banking so you'll know how much you have and also, you'll be able to plan your budget. Always make sure you double check what you have in your bank. This will help you plan out a smart budget so you won't overspend or overdraw.

I constantly have to do this because alot of times, I don't have any cash to bring with me. I try to have cash with me as much as I can, but alot of times, that's on an occassion.

Tip #3- Carrying A Scientific Calculator:

Actually, it doesn't matter what kind of calculator you have, but I chose this particular one is because you can figure fractions on this^^ When you find the fabric you need and the price per yard, figure up the cost up to your budget. Always make sure you add your tax percentage to get the total amount so you won't freak out if your fabric purchase is $1 to $2 above your budget.

It may look weird and you may be embarassed by this method, but it's always better to pre-figure your cost than to go up to the check out area and get an unwanted surprise^^ If you're not quite comfortable with the figure, then refigure again to make sure that it's the correct figure. Once the figure is to your liking, then have at it and get your fabric.

So, making sure that you're prepared for any purchase emergancy is always a smart idea. As long as you use your spending smarts, you should be fine and getting the fabric you need.

Well..... I hope this helps because I use this method all the time when it comes to purchasing fabric by the yard and it comes in handy^^
